Inventor Nick Holonyak
is the American engineer, educator and inventor of the light-emitting diode
(LED) in 1962 that emitted visible red light instead of infrared light, while
working at the General Electric Company’s research laboratory in Syracuse, NY.
Since Mr. Holonyak’s invention in 1962, LED’s have taken the world by storm.
Let’s look at two varieties of LED’s widely used in the manufacturing industry
for message centers, jumbotrons, video displays and LED screen tiles. When
searching for the best LED video display product, there are different models to
consider. Each model can provide more or less features depending on what your
needs are.
3-in-1 DIP (Dual In-Line Package)
technology is very versatile. The actual development of DIP or Dual In-Line Package technology, has been around for more than 50 years,
making this a mature technology. DIP LED’s are most usually recognized by their ‘pill’ or ‘bullet’ shaped design
as well as their long contacts that extend from the bottom of the LED. These
contacts or pins can be easily soldered into their bread board producing a
secure foundation for reliability. 3-in-1 provides better soldering adhesion
and waterproofing for outdoor LED video displays due to their more mature
technology.
The LED’s bullet shaped plastic serves as an outer lens that can focus the light coming from the diode, stable performance and anti-ultraviolet properties. However, the advantage of the 3-in-1 DIP is that it can defuse reflection its surface to produce uniform color to the viewer from any angle.The point density of 3-in-1 DIP, offers a higher definition,
brighter in daylight hours than its SMD counterpart and within a closer sight
distance DIP has the ability to use a smaller size to reach outstanding
resolution in an LED video display. The package structure of 3-in-1 is
equivalent to a common SMD, packaged into one lamp.
SMD (Surface Mounted
Device) or SMD chips are also popular in the LED world. SMD is a product of
SMT (Surface Mount Technology) which was introduced about 20 years ago. SMD's are great for light bulbs and missed call indicators on cellphones. These chips are much smaller in comparison to DIP technology and are flat like a square computer chip. However,
there are many disadvantages of SMD when thinking about LED video displays, message centers and jumbotrons.
Let’s take a look:
SMD is harder product to service when it comes down to it and this is an obvious problem when it comes to the LED
video display. Due to their smaller pixel size, SMD has large areas from pixel to pixels on low resolution screens which leads to dotty imaging and poor image
quality from viewing distances as well, SMD cannot go smaller than 10mm pixel pitch.
SMD is not as well protected as 3-in-1 technology for outdoor use and is best
not to be used near seawater due to high corrosion vulnerability and also uses
approximately 25% more energy than the comparable DIP screen.
SMD needs to be color matched carefully and then batched and the assembly
process for which makes repair down the road more difficult. Solder connections may be damaged by potting compounds going through thermal cycling
due to the fact that SMD is also unsuitable for large, high-power, high-voltage parts, for example in
power circuitry.
SMD are very unsuitable for components that are subject to
frequent mechanical stress, such as an outdoor LED video display and are simply
not bright enough for LED video displays in daylight hours over their DIP counterpart.
As you can see SMD are not the best options for LED video displays!
